A  2-year-old boy died after a family member found him unresponsive in a swimming pool Sunday evening in west Phoenix. 

Phoenix firefighters and police officers responded to a call of a possible drowning Sunday at around 6:20 p.m. at a home near 68th and Southern avenues, according to Kenny Overton, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Fire Department. 

Family members had already started CPR procedures on the child when firefighters arrived on the scene, Overton said. 

Phoenix police, fire and hospital staff continued resuscitation procedures. Paramedics took the boy in extremely critical condition to a hospital where he died shortly after. 

 At this time, this incident is being investigated as a tragic accident, according to Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Ann Justus on Tuesday.
