An 11-year-old girl died after being taken to a local hospital following a fatal vehicle collision in Phoenix Friday afternoon.
Fire crews responded to the crash near North 43rd and West Clarendon avenues shortly after 1 p.m. Three children and two women were reported injured in the collision, said Vincent Cole, spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department.
The pedestrians involved were taken to local hospitals, where Alysah Marin, 11, was later pronounced dead, Cole said.
A 32-year-old woman, an 18-year-old woman, a 14-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy were hospitalized in serious condition.
According to Phoenix police, a silver sedan was traveling north bound on 43rd Avenue, and while changing lanes struck a gold sedan traveling in the same direction. The gold sedan was redirected off of the roadway and struck a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk.
Phoenix police officers evaluated the driver of the silver sedan, identified as Fernando De La Garza, 51, and found him to be exhibiting signs of impairment, Cole said.
Garza was booked into the Maricopa County Jail for one count of manslaughter, one count of endangerment and two counts of aggravated assault.
