Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said they arrested a driver Sunday after the person crashed a vehicle on Interstate 17, killing a passenger and shutting down the highway near Indian School Road for hours.

The unidentified driver was traveling north about 5:30 a.m. before crashing into the wall on the right shoulder, said Raul Garcia, a DPS spokesman.

The sole passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died, police said.

The driver tried to run away, but troopers found the person in a nearby neighborhood, Garcia said. Impairment is believed to be a factor, he said, and the driver will be booked on suspicion of manslaughter.

Garcia said officials were working to notify the victim’s relatives Sunday afternoon.
