Zack Godley mowed through a major-league lineup again on Saturday evening. He did not need many pitches. He did not allow many baserunners. He started a game and the Diamondbacks won it, a script that’s played out more often than not in the season’s first 10 weeks.

And yet Godley stood in front of his locker after a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers unsure whether his next outing would be with the Diamondbacks or the Reno Aces. Though he was thoroughly impressive in giving up just two hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings at Chase Field – and though the outing was reminiscent of all of his previous starts – his manager was making no promises.

“Yes, there are some moves that are imminent,” Torey Lovullo said. “We don’t know what they are. We’re going to walk through that and talk about it as a group as we move forward.”

Right-hander Taijuan Walker tested the blister on his right index finger on Saturday by throwing another bullpen session, and Lovullo said he expected Walker’s next step to be a return to the big-league rotation, where he’s certain to rejoin right-hander Zack Greinke and lefty Robbie Ray.

But who comprises the final two spots remains to be seen. Right-hander Randall Delgado has thrown well in Walker’s place, logging a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings. Lefty Patrick Corbin has struggled of late but threw better against the Padres on Thursday.

And then there’s Godley. The Diamondbacks have seemed reluctant throughout the year to give him much of anything, the current situation only the latest example. He dominated the Tigers on May 10, but Lovullo was noncommittal on Godley starting again.

When he took the ball five days later, he again overpowered the opposing team, and Lovullo was again noncommittal.

Then, after Godley logged a fifth consecutive quality start on May 31, the Diamondbacks surprisingly optioned him the next day to Reno, where he made an abbreviated start before returning several days later after an injury opened the door.

In 44 1/3 innings, Godley has logged a 2.44 ERA, allowing just 31 hits and 13 walks. The only damage the Brewers did against him on Saturday came in the span of two pitches: a curveball that plunked Jesus Aguilar followed by a poorly located fastball, a pitch Hernan Perez sent into the left-field bleachers for a two-run homer.

Godley admitted to being disappointed when he was sent down earlier this month. It was a decision, he said, that was made by someone else, one he could not control, and he even called it “the logical choice,” in that he has minor-league options remaining and others don’t. He said having gone through that does not change the way he approaches his current situation.

“My mindset’s the same as it always is,” Godley said. “I can’t try to think about anything differently. All I can do is continue to do what I can, control what I can control. What they decide to do with me has nothing to do with me. I can’t control any of that. All I can do is go out on the mound and pitch and hopefully do well enough to stay.”

Said Lovullo: “There’s a lot of mental toughness that he is showing because he is walking through a pretty tough situation. He’s pitching, he doesn’t know if he’s going to get the ball the next time. He continues to be very impressive and the biggest key here is that he hasn’t let it affect his game plan or his ability to go out there and do what he did tonight.”
