The Arizona Department of Public Safety stopped a wrong-way driver on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix on Friday night, officials said.

DPS said the vehicle was going north on the southbound side of I-17 near Daisy Mountain Road before turning around and heading driving south on the highway at 20 mph.

DPS troopers used tire spikes to flatten the vehicle’s tires, forcing the driver to stop, officials said.

The incident, which occurred just before 9 p.m., shut the freeway for a short time, forcing a long backup on the southbound side.

Troopers took the man into custody, DPS said.

Further details were not immediately available.
