A woman and her two children were injured in a car crash on Sunday after their vehicle was hit by a man suspected of driving while impaired, according to Phoenix police.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said 58-year-old Alfredo Enriquez tried to buy alcohol from a business near Camelback Road and 43rd Avenue just before 7:30 p.m., but was turned away “because he appeared to be intoxicated.”

Despite store employees’ efforts to stop him from driving away from the business, police say Enriquez left the area and headed east on Camelback Road. He then collided with another vehicle as he tried to turn north on 41st Drive.

The 41-year-old woman in the vehicle was seriously injured and her two children had critical injuries, according to Thompson. All three were taken to a local hospital.

A store employee who saw the crash tried to get Enriquez to remain at the scene; however, he fled on foot, Thompson said. Officers later found him at the registered address of the vehicle, where he was determined to be impaired, Thompson said.

Enriquez was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault and one count of leaving the scene of a serious injury traffic accident.
