A portion of U.S. 60 in Mesa was closed to traffic Thursday night for a police situation.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety was on the scene. DPS officials said troopers “are out with a subject on the freeway” and that no other information was available.

The westbound lanes were closed to traffic at Gilbert Road shortly after 8 p.m., he Arizona Department of Transportation said.

Initially, the eastbound lanes also were closed at Stapley Drive; ADOT said.

Eastbound traffic was stopped about an hour later on US 60 east of  Loop 101, after an accident occurred  on the eastbound US 60 near Alma School Road that blocked several lanes.

It was not known how long the freeway would be closed in the area.

Additional details were not available.
