The Transportation Security Administration announced Monday that nine guns have been discovered in carry-on luggage at Sky Harbor International Airport over the past nine days — seven of which were loaded.

That brings the total number of guns discovered at the airport so far this year to 83, according to a statement from TSA.

“Despite an 80% reduction in the number of people screened by TSA compared to this time last year, TSA officers have not lost their focus,” said Jerry Agnew, TSA federal security director for Phoenix Sky Harbor. “They remain vigilant and continue to prevent security threats from making it onboard an airplane.”

Traveling with a firearm

TSA officials said this should serve as a reminder to travelers to never bring a firearm — loaded or unloaded — with them to the security checkpoint in carry-on luggage.

Doing so could result in a civil penalty of more than $13,000, Agnew said. Passengers may also have their Trusted Traveler status and TSA Precheck benefits revoked.

“In order to maintain social distancing and not have to face a bag search,

passengers are reminded to know precisely what is in their bags before leaving for the airport,” Agnew said.

Passengers must secure any firearms, including replicas, in a locked, hard-sided case packed in their checked luggage, in accordance with TSA guidelines. Only the passenger should have access to the key or combination to the case.

Passengers should also declare any ammunition and parts upon check-in and ensure that they are packed securely in their checked baggage.

Travelers should check gun laws and airport guidelines within the states to which they are traveling to make sure that they are flying safely and in accordance with guidelines.
