There really have been only two constants when it comes to the Cardinals’ offensive line the past two seasons. One, pretty much every starter ends up hurt. And two, that’s pretty much every starter with the exception of center A.Q. Shipley.

For a second straight year, Shipley has been the only Cardinals starter up front who has yet to miss a game.

“He’s as tough as a boot,” wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said.

Shipley will make his 30th consecutive start on Sunday when the Cardinals (6-7) play at the Redskins (5-8), and he’s been a veritable rock in the middle of the line.

“I’ve known A.Q. since he first came into the league way back in Pittsburgh, so having him is a blessing,” offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Harold Goodwin said Thursday. “Thinking about it, he’s the last man standing, so that speaks to his toughness.

“Obviously at this point in the season, nobody is completely 100 percent healthy. You’ve got little nicks and bruises, but for him to come out every day and play at a high level, it’s been a blessing. I like having him. He’s another coach on the field. If there’s a problem or something that arises in the middle of a drive, he can always fix it.”

Not bad for a smaller player who was always told he wasn’t big enough to cut it at any level.

“Well, that’s never come from me,” Goodwin said. “I’ve always loved him because a competitor is a competitor. You’ve got a guy who was a wrestler, who played point guard in high school in basketball even though he’s got short arms. He’s round, though, so he can still eat up a bunch of space.

“He has his limitations and he knows what they are, but he competes and he loves the game. If you get a guy who loves to play the game, that will take you a long way in this league.”

Shipley was born tough, according to Fitzgerald.

“He’s a Pittsburgh guy, man,” Fitzgerald said. “Western Pennsylvania guys are some of the toughest you’ve ever been around, and he embodies everything that that region represents. It’s not that he hasn’t been hurt. He’s had ankle and shoulders and knees and all types of things. But he really is as tough as they come.”

Palmer done for ’17?

Quarterback Carson Palmer is eligible to be activated off injured reserve for the final two games of the season, but it’s looking less and less likely he will play again this season.

If the Cardinals were going to activate him, he would have resumed practicing with the team this week, assuming his left arm is healed enough for him to be cleared by the medical staff. That wasn’t thought to be an issue by this point, but his absence seems to indicate he will finish the season on IR.

Fitzgerald was asked if he would be disappointed should Palmer not play again this season.

“Well, I don’t know what the status of his injury is. That’s a question that (head athletic trainer) Tom Reed and the medical staff will have to answer,” Fitzgerald said. “Carson is a real tough guy. He loves to compete and he loves being out there playing and if he’s able, I’m pretty sure he would.”

SCOUTING REPORT: Cardinals vs. Washington Redskins game prediction

Tramon trucking on

He may be 34, but veteran cornerback Tramon Williams keeps impressing with every game for the Cardinals as the starter opposite All-Pro Patrick Peterson. Williams leads the team with 10 pass breakups and intercepted his second pass of the year last week, giving him 32 in his 11 NFL seasons.

“It was never a doubt that he would step in and do what he needed to do,” Peterson said of Williams. “… He’s been to Super Bowls, been to NFC Championships, so he’s prepared for those moments. There’s nothing he doesn’t see, so to see him to make those plays, it was a given.”

Peterson said he hopes the Cardinals are able to bring back Williams next season, even though the veteran is set to hit free agency.

“I asked him after last week’s game, ‘How much you got left in the tank?’ He said he’s got a lot left so hopefully we can get him back. If not, that’s just the nature of the business.”

Williams has a huge fan in Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher, who said Thursday: “The great part about it is to have someone with his football smarts. You don’t have as many interceptions as he has in the National Football League and not play with great awareness. You see it when he’s jumped routes and you’re like, ‘Why was he doing that?’ It’s because he knew it was coming. He’s aggressive, he attacks, he takes chances and I love it. l love what he’s been doing over there.”
