Manager Torey Lovullo breaks down D-Backs’ loss, road trip

When manager Torey Lovullo perused the Diamondbacks’ schedule before the season, a couple of things immediately jumped out to him.

First, Arizona’s opening week consisted of seven games against the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians. Not exactly an easy way to start the year. Then, in late May, the Diamondbacks would begin an 11-game road trip kicking off a stretch in which they would play 19 of 25 games on the road.

“I thought, ‘This is going to be something that we’re going to have to … show our face a little bit and show our toughness,’ ” Lovullo said. “I expect us to do that.”

The road trip takes on greater significance now that the Diamondbacks have become relevant again. After their 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, they’re 10 games above .500 (29-19) for the first time since 2011 and they boast the third-best record in baseball.

“We’re confident we have a really good team,” outfielder David Peralta said.

But can they pack that confidence – and success – into the luggage they took to Milwaukee on Wednesday evening? It’s no secret the Diamondbacks have been a different team on the road than they have been at home. There’s the record, of course. Arizona is 21-8 at Chase Field and 8-11 everywhere else, and three of those road wins came against the hapless San Diego Padres.

But there’s also been the dual personalities of the Diamondbacks offense. In its 29 games at home, Arizona is averaging 6.03 runs per game. On the road, 3.6 runs.

Arizona’s offense did perk up when it scored 19 runs in back-to-back games at San Diego late last week but, again, that’s the Padres. The question is, can the Diamondbacks’ “explosive” lineup, as Lovullo described it, show up in Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Miami the next 11 days?

“I know we’ve been playing really well at home and we need to match that on the road,” catcher Chris Herrmann said. “But the way we’ve been playing I don’t see how we don’t keep playing well on the road. We just need to keep playing the way we have been. Any time you’re on a winning streak like this (Arizona has won eight of its past nine) I think that carries over on the road.”

When Lovullo was asked about the home-road splits earlier this year, he shrugged them off, saying the sample size was too small. But the Diamondbacks have played 48 games and when the question was asked again of Lovullo on Wednesday, he responded differently.

“It probably is enough of a sample size but I know there’s enough time built in for it to change,” Lovullo said. “If it’s the end of August or September and it’s the same thing, we’re going to have to figure out how to manage playing on the road a little differently. I just know we have a tremendous comfort level in scoring runs and playing here. I think these guys are going to figure out how to do that (on the road).”

The road trip also will help answer the most pertinent question for Diamondbacks fans: Is this team for real? If Arizona can return home on June 5 still eight, nine or 10 games above .500, it will be hard not to believe. But if it falls on its face the next 11 days, doubt will creep in.

“I think we’re for real,” Herrmann said.

Time to prove it once and for all.

“We’re 8-11 on the road,” Lovullo said. “I feel like we need to do better. I feel like we can do better. And if you’re asking me do I think we will the answer is yes.”

Thursday’s game

Diamondbacks at Brewers

When: 5:10 p.m.

Where: Miller Park.

Pitchers: Diamondbacks LHP Robbie Ray (3-3, 3.91) vs. Brewers RHP Zach Davies (5-2, 5.44).

TV/Radio: FSAZ/KMVP-FM (98.7), KHOV-FM (105.1)

Ray has pitched well on the road this year, going 2-1 with a 1.03 ERA in four starts. In his last start, he threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres, allowing just two hits while striking out six. That outing came after two appearances in which he gave up eight walks in nine innings. … Davies hasn’t pitched past the sixth inning in any of his nine starts thus far. He’s given up 58 hits in 46 1/3 innings but he has won his last three starts and lowered his ERA by more than a run in that span.

Milwaukee Brewers

Like the Diamondbacks, the Brewers have been one of the surprise teams in the National League this year, leading the NL Central with a 25-20 record heading into Wednesday’s games. Milwaukee hasn’t been great at home, though, going 12-12. First baseman Eric Thames has been a revelation, hitting .309 with 13 homers, and Milwaukee is also getting strong offensive years from first baseman Travis Shaw and center fielder Keon Broxton, who has 10 steals. The Brewers’ pitching has been decent, with a 4.24 team ERA that’s tied for sixth in the NL.
