As a new mom, Tiffe Fermaint sought a community she could relate to but she just wasn’t finding what she was looking for. So, through her love of fashion, she created it herself.
Fermaint is the founder of Baby Teith, a clothing brand for kids who rock. The line, which began in 2013, is inspired by new wave, 80s rock, goth and post-punk aesthetic.
The brand is growing up, expanding from clothing inspired by music to launching its own record label. Fermaint recently announced the Oct. 23 launch of Baby Teith Records, a music label serving up post-punk and new wave tracks for kids.
The label has already signed “The Spookys” has its first artists.
Baby Teith also has a new downtown Phoenix headquarters where production of both clothes and songs will take place.
“What motivates us to grow the business and turn it into an empire is the community and what it really means to really bridge the generation between us and our children with music, so it’s touching,” Fermaint said.
What is ‘Baby Teith?’
From onesies that say “baby bat” and a Joy Division inspired “Toy Division” to t-shirts that say “music and motherhood” and “spooky mom,” Baby Teith connects parents and their kids through clothes that celebrate their personalities and love of music.
“I just had my daughter and I couldn’t find clothing that was cool for her and sensitive to our personality. There’s just so much joy in dressing our children like us, part of our crew,” Fermaint said.
“That was a huge part of growing the business, identifying those customers as moms, the goth moms, and really catering to them.”
Frequent shoppers of Baby Teith include tattoo artist Kat Von D, singer Mariqueen Maandig Reznor and her husband Trent Reznor of the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.
Fermaint has a background in fashion
Fermaint is well known in the Phoenix fashion scene. She’s created sold-out collections for Buffalo Exchange, had shows at Phoenix Fashion Week and worked in TV and movies.
Known for her Avant-Garde runway designs for adults, Fermaint began making children’s clothing in 2013.
“When I became pregnant I started making clothing for my daughter. Shortly after she was born, I had a lot of requests for that clothing to be produced,” Fermaint said.
She opened an Etsy shop for her clothing until the orders came in faster than she could sew them. So she quit all of her other work in the fashion industry to focus on her new brand full time.
Building a community for moms like her
Baby Teith has nearly 100,000 fans on social media, including a Facebook group called “Baby Teith Clubhouse Bonding over Music and Motherhood,” a safe space where moms can talk all things from dark 80s tracks to babies.
As a new mom managing the rapid growth of a popular clothing line, life had its challenges and Fermaint needed someone to relate to.
“That transition into becoming a mom, and then being a little bit different, was really difficult. And it made me very insecure,” she said.
Turns out she wasn’t the only mom who felt that way, the Facebook group has nearly 3,000 members.
“It became such a support group for everybody where we bond over music and motherhood. We’re a tight group of moms that lean on each other,” Fermaint said.
“I started to be really confident in how I am different and as a mother, I am different. But then also the community ensured me that there’s a lot of people similar to me all over the world that are feeling the same way in their community.”
Since she was 9 years old, Fermaint knew she wanted to be a fashion designer and work in the music industry. She grew up to make those dreams happen.
“I started trusting my business decisions a lot more, started trusting myself,” Fermaint said.
“I feel like I’ve definitely hit a stride right now with the community behind me. It feels right.”
