Audiences seem to be “curiouser and curiouser” about TheaterWorks’ new live show.
Due to strong ticket sales, the run of the Alice in Wonderland-themed show, “Curiouser & Curiouser,” has been extended through Nov. 1.
The show, which opened Sept. 10, is immersive with every theater stage, rehearsal space and hallway in the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts having been transformed into the world of “Alice in Wonderland” for the production. Only up to 10 audience members are allowed per performance and those small groups walk through the arts center and experience different scenes as they stop in each room.
Parents should note that the show is geared for audiences 16 and older. It contains some adult language. “Themes are not the Disney version,” according to TheaterWorks’ Facebook page.
“It’s part theatrical production, it’s part escape room, it’s part art installation. As theater makers, we’re usually building sets for being 40 feet away. With this one, the audience is really up close and personal, so that the attention to detail just blows my mind,” said artistic director Chris Hamby.
“I’m so proud that we are using artists that are right here homegrown and in our backyard. These are all Arizona artists that TheatreWorks has been able to keep working through this terrible time.”
How does it work?
The box office will give each guest a card with a symbol. The symbols are placed in specific areas throughout the facility. Wherever your symbol goes, you go.
“That’s really the method to our madness to keep all of the social distancing in order,” Hamby said.
“Most rooms have one or two, two actors in them. A couple of rooms are autonomous where the audience is in there by themselves.”
The entire experience lasts about 100 minutes and guests will visit about a dozen spaces. The production showcases visual art, music, puppetry, dance, theater and multimedia design.
More safety protocols
Audience members will be required to wear face coverings, temperatures will be taken upon arrival and gloves will be provided to guests to wear throughout the experience.
All touchpoints will be sanitized between groups, and a deep clean will take place each evening.
“We thought how could we safely create an experience for a small group of people, and an immersive piece just made sense. It’s something we can control, to really make sure the experience is safe for the audience and the actors,” said Hamby.
“And right now, we have the luxury of doing something totally different.”
