The Arizona Coyotes had to wait a day to make selections, but they landed five prospects in the NHL Draft’s final day Wednesday.
The Coyotes, after sitting out the first round Tuesday and not making a move to get into the second or third rounds Wednesday morning, announced their first pick a little more than four hours into the day.
The club started by selecting 18-year-old defenseman Mitchell Miller of Sylvania, Ohio in the fourth round. The right-handed shooter played for the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League this past season.
Miller, who is waiting on when he can start his college hockey career at North Dakota, scored eight goals with 25 assists in 44 games with Tri-City last season. He was rated No. 49 of the 219 North American skaters on which data was compiled by the NHL’s Central Scouting.
Forward Carson Bantle was the Coyotes’ second pick of the day, in the fifth round. Bantle,18, had 49 points (20 goals, 29 assists) and 54 penalty minutes in 49 games for Madison of the USHL last season, starting the year as an alternate captain before eventually being named captain.
Bantle, from Wisconsin, is set to play his college hockey at Michigan Tech.
The Coyotes used their next two picks on center Filip Barklund, an 18-year-old center from Sweden, in the sixth round, and traded next year’s seventh-round pick to the New Jersey Devils to move up in this year’s seventh round and choose Swedish forward Elliot Ekefjard.
With their final pick, No. 204 overall in the seventh round, the Coyotes chose forward Ben McCartney from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. McCartney, 19, scored 61 points in 61 games with 105 penalty minutes in the 2019-2020 season, including 25 goals and 36 assists.

The Coyotes tendered a qualifying offer to forward Christian Fischer before Wednesday afternoon’s league-imposed deadline. The 23-year-old forward has until October 18 to sign the offer sheet from the team. Forward Vinnie Hinostroza was not tendered and becomes an unrestricted free agent on Friday.
