A 16-year-old boy was arrested in relation to a residential shooting in Phoenix on Monday night that left a teen boy hospitalized in critical condition.

Around 6:30 p.m. officers responded to a shooting call in the area of 79th Lane and Indian School Road.

Police found a teen with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Tuesday, according to Phoenix police.

Investigators learned that the 14-year-old boy was inside a room in his home with friends. The group was handling a gun and the victim’s 16-year-old friend shot him while mishandling the gun, according to police.

Following the shooting, the 16-year-old and the rest of the group left the residence, leaving the wounded boy behind, according to police.

The 16-year-old went a few blocks west, where he committed an armed robbery, taking a car from a man at gunpoint, according to police.

The 16-year-old was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center for aggravated assault, weapons violations, and armed robbery.

The man who was robbed was not injured, police said. 

The name of the 16-year-old was not released.
