MIAMI – Right-hander Taijuan Walker won’t be ready to return from the disabled list on Sunday to face the Miami Marlins after all, meaning the Diamondbacks will have to make contingency plans for the final game of this 11-game road trip.

Walker was hoping the blister on his right index finger would be farther along in the healing process, but he had his bullpen session pushed back for the second consecutive day.

Walker doesn’t think he’s far from being ready, but neither he nor the Diamondbacks want to take any chances with something that could linger. Walker said he sought advice from Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez, who has dealt with a recurring blister issue of his own this season, and was told patience was the best course of action.

“Don’t go back out there until it’s 100 percent – he said that’s the best advice he can give me,” Walker said. “He tried to rush back. It’s tough because you want to be out there pitching, but at the same time I have to be smart and think about for the rest of the season. Especially since we’re playing really well.”

The most likely candidates appear to be Triple-A right-hander Braden Shipley, who had his most recent start for Reno pushed back in case he’s needed in the majors, or reliever T.J. McFarland, who has thrown three innings in each of his past two appearances but whose pitch count has yet to exceed 40.

Walker said neither he nor the team have another day targeted for his return, but he doesn’t think he’ll need much more time. Walker is expected to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

“It’s really close,” he said. “It has to heal on its own. There’s no magic solution for it. It feels like it’s getting close. I would say it’s probably like 90 percent (healed).”

Blanco limited due to thumb injury

Diamondbacks outfielder Gregor Blanco is hopeful the thumb injury he suffered on Thursday night isn’t serious and that he’ll be able to avoid a disabled-list stint, but he said Friday that for the time being he likely will be a limited contributor off the bench.

Blanco lost his balance in the outfield in pursuit of a ball and put his hand on the ground to brace himself when he “felt a little snap” in his thumb.

“It kind of got a little numb,” he said.

While Blanco said it felt better Friday than it did the previous night, he wasn’t sure how much he’d be able to do.

“It’s going to be a little hard to grab and swing the bat, but in any case, I could maybe bunt the ball or run the bases or maybe play some outfield,” he said. “I’ll definitely try to help the team in any way.”

He said he’ll see how it feels Saturday before possibly undergoing tests.

Lovullo: A.J. Pollock continues to progress

Center fielder A.J. Pollock did some light running around the bases on Thursday as he continues to progress from a right groin strain, said manager Torey Lovullo, who received positive reports both from the club’s medical staff and from Pollock himself.

“He’s very encouraged by how he feels,” Lovullo said. “He feels like he could do more but at this point that’s a good sign. His angle is, ‘I want to do more,’ and we’re holding him back.”

Lovullo said Pollock was probably running at about 60 percent effort on Thursday. The plan is for Pollock to do more running on Saturday.

General Manager Mike Hazen said Wednesday that Pollock was still perhaps two weeks away from returning from the disabled list. He last played on May 14.
