Canaan, Jackson out

Josh Jackson (hip) and Isaiah Canaan (strained left adductor muscle) will not play against the Rockets, interim coach Jay Triano said.

Jackson’s absence is not a surprise. He was listed as doubtful Friday morning. But Canaan was listed as probable and told reporters he was ready to play.

D’Antoni and Barkley

The Suns were celebrating 90s night at the game Friday so former Suns and current Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni was asked if he would have liked to coach Charles Barkley, the NBA MVP in the 1992-93 season.

“He’d be great. He’d have to shoot some threes, though,” D’Antoni said.

Suns injury news

The Suns will be without forward Marquese Chriss (hip) Friday against the Rockets and might not have the services of rookie Josh Jackson as well.

Phoenix is listing Jackson as questionable with a hip injury, but Jackson said after Friday morning’s shootaround that he has a groin injury and doesn’t think he’ll be able to play.

“I feel pretty good as of right now but the problem comes when I try to go full speed and get up and down and try to defend guys,” Jackson said.

Jackson said he suffered the injury in Sunday’s win over Oklahoma City and that when he showed up for practice Tuesday (Phoenix had Monday off) “I just felt shot. My leg just felt bad.”

“I feel like it could have been worse,” Jackson added. “But missing a game is definitely not fun.”

Dragan Bender will start in Chriss’ place while Danuel House will see minutes off the bench as the backup small forward to T.J. Warren, interim coach Jay Triano said.

The Suns also added Alec Peters to the roster for Friday’s game. Peters, signed to a two-way contract, has been playing for the NAZ Suns, Phoenix’s G League affiliate.

Chriss had played in 124 straight games to start his career, the most by a Sun at the start of his career since Kyle Macy played in his first 329 games from 1980 to 1984.

There was one bit of positive injury news Friday.  Backup point guard Isaiah Canaan, who’s listed as probable with an adductor muscle injury, said he thinks he’ll be able to play against Houston.

“I feel fine,” Canaan said. “If the trainers are ready to let me go I’m ready.”

Canaan has been out since Phoenix’s loss to Denver on January 3.
