The person who was barricaded inside a vehicle with a weapon on Wednesday evening northwest of the Valley surrendered and was taken into custody, police said.

Live television pictures showed the suspect exiting the vehicle with both hands up, walking backward and then lying on the pavement awaiting his arrest shortly around 6:15 p.m.

The arrest ended a standoff that lasted nearly an hour and blocked a major road north of Sun City during rush hour.

During the standoff, live pictures showed numerous police vehicles from multiple agencies lined up behind a white SUV, which police said was on Grand Avenue and Center Street in Wittmann, which is north of Sun City West.

Grand Avenue is designated as U.S. 60 in the area and is a major route from the northwest Valley to Wickenburg.

The standoff forced the road to close during rush hour late Wednesday afternoon as police negotiated with the person. The eastbound lanes were reopening shortly after 6:30 p.m., and the westbound lanes were expected to open a short time later.

Further details on what led to the situation were not immediately available.
