Karen Self has won 10 girls state basketball championships at Chandler Seton Catholic. She’s taken the school to a couple of national tournaments.

But this will be a first for her.

Self on Thursday was named the head coach of the West for the April 1 girls basketball McDonald’s All-American game.

In a school release, the 28-year Seton coach said, “I want to thank the McDonald’s All American Committee for this tremendous honor.”

“I am humbled to be a part of the incredible players, coaches, and alumni of this amazing event,” Self added. “I am truly honored and grateful for this opportunity.”

Self’s assistants will be her own Seton assistant, Kayla Refner, and Mesa Mountain View head coach Bill Guthrie.

This is considered the most prestigious high school All-American game in the country with top seniors in the country selected.

The girls All-American game will be played April 1 at 3 p.m. (Arizona time) on ESPN2, preceding the boys All-American game, at Houston’s Toyota Center.
