An unofficial weekend visit to California turned into football commitments for Peoria Liberty linebacker Ryan Puskas and defensive Braxten Croteau on Sunday.
Hours after Croteau made his commitment to the Pac-12 school public on social media, Puskas followed.
Both are 2019 recruits who are ranked among the top 25 in Arizona in the 2019 class by azcentral sports. Puskas, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, who made All-Arizona at strong safety last season, is ranked No. 15. Croteau, 6-5, 240, who had 70 tackles and nine sacks last season, is ranked No. 23.
Croteau said Cal wants him to play “the traditional” defensive end.
“I feel it is the best fit for me,” Croteau said. “Cal has a great coaching staff and offers me the best opportunity to excel athletically and academically.”
Puskas said that Cal likes him at inside linebacker.
“The academics played a major part in why we chose Cal, but for me it felt like home,” Puskas said. “The coaching staff truly cared. They’re supportive, and we both fit in with the players on the team.”
Puskas has 173 tackles and nine interceptions on varsity the past three seasons. He also has seven career blocked punts.
Puskas and Croteau return from a team that gave state champion Peoria Centennial its toughest game in the 5A state playoffs last season in a 42-37 semifinal loss.
