It’s not a record, but close to it.

There were 13 rising seniors from Arizona chosen to play in the Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif., on Aug. 5-9 at Blair Field, where major league and college baseball scouts will be evaluating top talent from all over the country.

This is the second-most ever from Arizona in one class.

In 2016, Arizona sent 16 players. The previous most before that was 10.

Scottsdale Christian pitcher/first baseman Ronan Kopp, 6-foot-6, 205 pounds, who helped the Eagles win the 2A title in May, is part of the Arizona group picked to play. The Arizona State commit was the Gatorade Arizona High School Baseball Player of the Year.

Kopp was invited to play for the West in the 2019 Perfect Game All-American Classic on Aug. 11 at Petco Park in San Diego. His fastball has been clocked at 94 miles per hour. He has a wicked curveball.

Mountain Pointe infielder Ethan Long also will be playing in the Area Code Games. The Arkansas commit, along with Kopp, was named first team preseason All-American by Rawlings Perfect Game.

Chandler Hamilton, the 6A state champion, has two players — outfielder Michael Brueser and catcher Tyler Wilson — part of the Arizona contingent that will be playing for the Cincinnati Reds team.

There will be eight teams represented by Major League Baseball teams playing games against each other during the week. The players were chosen through regional tryouts.

In the 2019 class, there were 70 high school players in Arizona who signed with Division I colleges for baseball.

“I believe Arizona high school baseball produces more D-I and professional athletes than any other sport per capita,” said Hamilton coach Mike Woods, who produced Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger. “We are one if not the top state nationally.

“I’m not sure if any other sport can say that. The Arizona baseball scene is as strong as it’s ever been.”
