Residents of the small town of Crown King were asked to be ready to evacuate Thursday, as a 300-acre wildfire called the Horse Fire blazed just five miles from the town in Yavapai County.

While mandatory fire evacuations were not yet in effect as of Thursday evening, the American Red Cross has opened up an evacuation center at Mayer High School in preparation.

On Thursday around noon, authorities responded to a fire on Horse Mountain in the Prescott National Forest blazing through chaparral and juniper, according to a statement by the Prescott National Forest.

“Due to the fire’s remote location and rugged terrain, fire managers are currently relying on aircraft to suppress the fire,” the statement read.

Crown King is under a “SET” alert, meaning residents should be ready to evacuate and may consider evacuating voluntarily, according to the Arizona Emergency Information Network.
