Lost in Edinson Volquez’s no-hitter on Saturday was another impressive performance from right-hander Randall Delgado, the reliever-turned-starter who continues to make a case to remain in the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation.

Delgado gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. In three starts since right-hander Taijuan Walker landed on the disabled list, Delgado has given up three earned runs in 15 innings, with two walks and 15 strikeouts.

It’s not just results, it’s that he’s also looked the part: He’s been efficient; he’s had a three-pitch mix, with a fastball that averages 94-95 mph to go with a pair of effective secondary pitches in his change-up and slider; and he’s exhibited good command, not making the same mistakes over the plate he made during his days as a starter earlier in his career.

What more could the Diamondbacks be looking for out of a starting pitcher?

“Nothing,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “The pitch efficiency is what stands out the most. Being able to stand on the pitches when he needs to, to get big double plays like he did (Saturday). Not backing down from any challenges. He shows all the really good qualities of a successful starter. It’s not by accident that it’s happened. He’s working in a very good way right now.”

Delgado seems all but assured of starting again, though the Diamondbacks haven’t announced starters beyond the upcoming three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

“Every time he goes out there he’s given us a consistent outing,” Lovullo said. “… It’s been that way every start. He’s deserved the next start. I think we’re going to look long and hard at continuing to run him out there every fifth day.”

Delgado last started on a regular basis in 2013, his first year with the Diamondbacks, and he believes he’s a better pitcher now than he was then in a number of ways.

“I think I’ve been learning a lot and I know myself a little bit more,” he said. “I’m more consistent. I know how to handle myself. I understand more of the game. I’m way more experienced. The time in the bullpen was so valuable to me. I was learning so much there.”

Delgado throws essentially the same mix of pitches he did back then, but he thinks he’s gotten better at repeating his delivery.

“Even if the movement is the same as before, my location is better,” Delgado said, “and I think that’s the more important thing.”

Tomas out again with groin issue

Left fielder Yasmany Tomas, who missed two games with a groin issue near the beginning of the road trip, continued to be bothered by it, Lovullo said, which is why he wasn’t in the lineup on Saturday and was out again on Sunday.

“Today, he’s usable, but we want to give him a little more time to recuperate,” Lovullo said. “We’re staying away from him.”

Tomas has not swung the bat well since initially returning from the groin injury. In seven games, he’s 3 for 24 (.125) with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Tomas is one of several Diamondbacks hitters whose production at home (.298 average, .964 OPS) is far better than on the road (.183, .548).

Short hop

Right-hander Taijuan Walker is likely to test the blister on his right index finger on Wednesday in an outing at extended spring training. If all goes well, Lovullo intimated it is possible Walker could return from the disabled list after that.
