Police are working to determine the contents of a suspicious package that prompted an evacuation Thursday night at a Chandler apartment complex.

Around 10 p.m., residents were asked to evacuate from a complex near Alma School and Elliot roads.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we evacuated the immediate area for the safety of the residents and other bystanders,” Det. Zachary Waters, a Chandler police spokesman, said.

The package was safely removed around midnight, and residents were escorted back to their residences by officers, Waters said.

Police have not determined the contents of the suspicious package, and they are working with local agencies to see if it contains hazardous materials.

The investigation is ongoing. No further updates are available.
