A week after Javier Herrera was killed by gunfire in Phoenix, police are still looking for answers — and so is his mother, Sandi Hernandez.
Phoenix police said Herrera was riding his bike near 16th Avenue and Buckeye Road around 10 p.m. on March 4 when a group of people in a field started shooting.
“All I know is that that night, there was a group of people outside in the field, and they started shooting a gun,” said Hernandez. Her son, who she said was 21 though police reported his age as 22, was riding a bike heading to or back from the store, “and that’s when he got hit.”
According to police, the group left before officers arrived.
Neither Hernandez nor police know who was in that field or who shot Herrera.
Hernandez spoke out about what happened so someone, anyone, can could hear and come forward with information about who was involved.
Herrera recently moved to Phoenix to start a life there. According to his mother, he was a regular person surviving day by day.
“He was just trying so hard to, to have a life and to be on his own, and one day start a family of his own,” said Hernandez, who lives in Nogales.
In her last best memory of Herrera, she remembered how happy and excited he was on an outing. He gave her a deep hug and a kiss on the cheek.
“Please come forward. Please say something. Don’t stay quiet,” said Hernandez. “Justice needs to be served for my son.”
Phoenix police said there are still no updates in the ongoing investigation, and they are looking for information.
