Phoenix Police identified the suspect and victim of an homicide shooting early Saturday morning off of Thomas Road and 67th Avenue.

Police arrested Heriberto Celaya-Leyva, 23, Sunday as a suspect in the shooting of 20-year-old Kevin Gomez Avizca after investigating the shooting, according Mercedes Fortune, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department.

In the investigation Fortune said police learned that Celaya-Leyva and Avizca were in a verbal argument that turned physical. While fighting, Celaya-Leyva pointed a handgun at Avizca and shot him, she said.

Police originally responded to a call reporting the argument and gunfire in the area around 3:20 a.m. Saturday. Avizca was later pronounced dead inside an apartment.

Witnesses reported that both the victim and suspect knew each other, Fortune said.

She said investigators conducted interviews and gathered enough information at the scene to develop probable cause to arrest Celaya-Leyva under charges of second degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited possessor.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
