A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting and killing another man Wednesday night in Phoenix, Maricopa County court documents show.

Joshua Robert Wear was arrested after Phoenix police responded around 11 p.m. to a report of an injured person in an apartment complex near Seventh Street and Cinnabar Avenue.

Officers found Joseph Sylvie II, 34, who had been shot in the upper right chest. He was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly after midnight, the records show.

Witnesses told police they heard an argument before hearing what sounded like gunshots inside one of the apartments, the documents show.

Sylvie yelled at bystanders to call 911 as he ran from an apartment, witnesses told police. The bystanders then guided officers to the Sylvie’sapartment, documents show.

Officers entered the apartment to find Wear holding a handgun, which he immediately dropped in response to officers. Wear told officers, “It was self-defense,” the documents show.

Wear was booked on one count of second-degree murder, the records show.
