Officials on Wednesday identified the man killed in a Monday morning shooting near Apache Junction as 39-year-old Gilbert Hale.
The suspected shooter was identified as 39-year-old Darren Franklin Johnston, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded to the 10700 block of East Boulder Drive, located in a county island near Apache Junction, around 1:30 a.m. to find Hale unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound, MCSO said.
Officials performed life-saving measures and transported Hale to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Surveillance video helped detectives identify Johnston as the suspect, MCSO said.
Detectives also found additional information and evidence that implicated Johnston in the shooting, MCSO said.
Johnston was found near Albuquerque on Tuesday and was taken into custody by the New Mexico State Police, who are assisting MCSO in the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing.
