What is a Silent Witness and how do you become one?
Two people were shot dead while sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a south Tempe apartment complex late Thursday night, officials said.
Police identified the victims as 20-year-old DeSean Estrada and 16-year-old Kayon Williams, according to the Associated Press.
Williams was a junior at McClintock High School, according to a release from the Tempe Union High School District.
“Our hearts are broken at the news of the tragic loss of two young lives. McClintock Junior Kayon Williams was well-liked by everyone who knew him. He has been described as funny and loved to make people laugh. The entire McClintock family is devastated by his death,” the release said.
District spokeswoman Jennifer Liewer confirmed that Estrada graduated from McClintock in 2015.
Williams attended McClintock’s graduation ceremony Thursday evening, according to multiple posts on social media. At 11:15 p.m. Thursday, police were called to the Garden Grove Apartment Homes on reports of shots fired.
“When officers arrived on the scene, they located a vehicle,” Tempe Officer Anthony Nardini said. “And when they went in contact with the vehicle, they found two deceased subjects inside the vehicle: one in the driver’s seat, the other in the front passenger’s seat.”
Sgt. Josie Montenegro, a Tempe police spokeswoman, said a helicopter and police-dog search of the area did not lead police to any possible suspects.
“Officers are canvassing the area for witnesses, and detectives are investigating the crime scene for further evidence,” Montenegro said Friday morning.
They say the shooting doesn’t appear to be a random act of violence and no suspect or suspects have been identified, according to the Associated Press.
Kenny Gay, 20, was friends with both victims and said he was spending time with them half an hour before they were killed.
“Kayon was so funny and goofy. He was always fun to be around,” Gay said. “DeSean wanted to start his own clothing brand. He always had his mind on fashion and clothes.”
He said they were hanging out at Estrada’s house, and even talked about going on vacation together before Gay headed home. He said he’s shocked that
“I was close with them,” he said. “They were like my brothers in a sense.”
