A dog was killed and a man was in serious condition after a fire at a mechanic shop in West Phoenix early Sunday morning, officials said.

At about 12:30 a.m. crews responded to a fire at a shop near 35th Avenue and Lincoln Street, said Phoenix Fire Capt. Reda Bigler.

Firefighters quickly gained control of the blaze and rescued a man who received inhalation burns after trying to extinguish the fire himself, she said.

He was transported to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition.

Two small dogs, Bigler said, were pulled out of the building but crews were only able to revive one dog.

No other details were immediately available and the scene remained under investigation Sunday morning.
