Phoenix Rising FC is placing head coach Rick Schantz and forward Junior Flemmings on administrative leave following allegations that a homophobic slur was directed toward Collin Martin of San Diego Loyal SC on Wednesday night’s game.

Earlier today, Martin, who is openly gay, released a statement claiming that Flemmings called him a homophobic slur, which led to San Diego forfeiting its match against Phoenix. Flemmings has denied the allegations.

Meanwhile, Schantz drew criticism for being caught on an open mic arguing with San Diego head coach Landon Donovan, saying, “Come on, man, don’t make a big scene… They’re competing.” Schantz went on ABC15 Arizona to talk about the video.

“I deeply regret what I said in the moment without having all of the facts,” Schantz said. “I don’t disrespect them for what they did. I don’t disrespect them at all. If it was said, I think that it’s awful and doesn’t belong in football.”

Martin opened up on the incident in a video released by San Diego, shocked by what was said to him on the pitch.

“I’ve been playing for eight years, professionally, and I’ve never had a word said to me like that,” Martin said. “I felt personally attacked.”

Phoenix Rising FC plays its final game of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 3, potentially without Schantz and Flemmings.

The team is currently under investigation by the USL, with players going through “extensive interviews.” It is unknown when Schantz or Flemmings will return to the team, if at all.

“Phoenix Rising FC is actively anti-homophobia and anti-racist and has a zero tolerance policy for actions which run contrary to these core values.”
