Phoenix police shot a man who advanced on an officer while armed with a knife on Wednesday evening, police said.

The shooting took place about 7 p.m. near 44th Street and Camelback Road, according to Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

A police sergeant responded to a report of a man acting violently toward people and damaging the surrounding area, police said.

The man began running away from the sergeant and stopped near the canal, and the sergeant realized that he was armed with a knife, police said. She repeated commands for him to drop the knife, but he refused and began to advance toward her, police said.

At that moment, the sergeant fired her gun at the man, police said.

Officers provided first aid and the man was then transported to the hospital where he was said to have injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Police did not name the man or the sergeant who shot him.

No officers were injured during the shooting.

An investigation is underway. No further information was immediately available.
