A man who was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery after a standoff with Phoenix police Thursday was identified as 22-year-old Lorenzo M. Gonzales, police officials said Friday morning.

A Phoenix police officer fired his gun during the standoff at Gonzales’ home, near East Hadley Street and Central Avenue, when the suspect came to the front door with a gun and pointed it at officers.

But Gonzales retreated back into the house and no one was injured, police officials said in a news release.

Gonzales was later arrested and booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of armed robbery and aggravated assault on a police officer.

Earlier Thursday, officers were investigating an armed robbery about 7:20 a.m. at a Tolleson store near Buckeye Road and Central Avenue around the same time that officers went to Gonzales’ home to follow up on a robbery investigation, the release stated.

Officers at the home determined the man’s description matched that of the suspect from previous robberies. Police watched the home and determined Gonzales was alone inside.

Officers tried to talk Gonzales into coming out of the home, but he refused. He barricaded himself inside the house while officers from the Special Assignments Unit continued to communicate with him, according to the release.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., an officer spotted Gonzales armed at the front door and fired his gun, officials said in the release. Gonzales eventually came out of the house unarmed and was taken into custody.

Police officials said Gonzales was accused of committing several armed robberies over the past week, according to a Facebook post.

The officer who fired his gun was 42 years old with 15 years of service to the department.
