A Phoenix police car was destroyed during officers’ attempt to capture a man suspected of pointing a handgun at several people and then fleeing police.

Police responded at about 6 p.m. Thursday to reports of a man pointing a gun at people at an apartment complex in the 3100 block of West Vogel Street. Police found the man and attempted to stop him, but he fled and police pursued, Phoenix Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said.

The driver crashed into a raised median in the 2700 block of West Griswold Avenue. Police “believed that the vehicle was disabled” and tried to box the driver in using police vehicles, Mercedes said. They were exiting their vehicles when the driver hit the gas and crashed into one of the marked police cars. No officers were injured. The driver then fled again, Mercedes said.

The driver then crashed into a vehicle at the intersection of 35th and Dunlap avenues, ran a red light and crashed into a taxi containing the driver and an adult and child passenger. None received serious injuries.

Julian Vela, 27, was then arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on police officers and unlawful flight.
