A Phoenix Police sergeant-in-training was injured Saturday night when he pushed a tow-truck driver out of the way of an oncoming crash.

The officer was standing at 2nd Street and Greenway Parkway near a car being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck when a medical two-door hatchback traveling eastbound on Greenway Parkway crossed the median into oncoming traffic, striking two other vehicles, said Phoenix Sgt. Vince Lewis.

The officer shoved the tow-truck driver to safety, and then dove out of the way himself. The officer was inured trying to get out of the way, but Lewis said he was not hit by one of the vehicles.

The officer received minor non-life threatening injuries but continued to render aid to unconsious hatchback driver, who was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Lewis said the officer is a nine year veteran at the Phoenix Police Department.
