The Phoenix couple claiming police officers used excessive force and threats after an alleged shoplifting incident have filed a formal records request demanding an exhaustive list of city records — including the police dispatch recordings from just before the confrontation.

Dravon Ames and Iesha Harper stood outside Phoenix City Hall late Monday morning with their attorney, former Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne and community activist Rev. Jarrett Maupin to announce the filing.

Ames and Harper garnered national attention after cell phone footage showed officers draw their guns and shout obscenity-filled threats at the family, whose 4-year-old daughter was later accused of taking a doll from a Family Dollar.

The records request, which Maupin filed with the city electronically earlier Monday morning, demands the emails, texts, social media messages and other forms of communication from city leaders and their employees containing certain names or phrases.

Some of the phrases are as generic as “video,” “media” and “statement.”

A city of Phoenix spokesman confirmed with The Arizona Republic that the city had received Maupin’s records request but refused to comment on it.

Horne said he hopes for a prompt response from the city and threatened to file a “special action” if the city took too long to release the records. However, Horne refused to say what he considered to be a reasonable time frame.

“I have to give them a reasonable time,” Horne said. “So I can’t put a number of days on it now but we’ll play it by ear as we go along.”

TOM HORNE: Why has ex-attorney general aligned himself with the Rev. Jarrett Maupin?

Horne said he did so while representing the family of Jacob Harris, whom police fatally shot in January and received city records the following day — nearly six months after he filed the request.
