Authorities say an Uber driver was arrested Friday after he shot a gun toward the ground, ultimately injuring one of his passengers.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the shooting near Loop 202 and Alma School Road just before 1 a.m., said sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. Calbert Gillett.
The passengers of the Uber rider told deputies they were arguing with the driver traveling along Loop 202 when he exited at Alma School Road and stopped, Gillett said. The driver was later identified by police as 60-year-old Peter Caso.
The passengers were removed from the car before Caso “threatened to spray the passengers with a can of disinfectant,” Gillett said.
Caso then took out a gun and fired a round toward the ground, which ricocheted and hit one of the passengers in the lower leg, Gillett said. The passenger had minor injures and was treated at the scene by fire officials, Gillett said.
Caso left the scene before deputies arrived but was later arrested at his home without issue, according to Gillett.
He faces charges on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault, disorderly conduct with a weapon and four counts of endangerment, Gillett said.
An Uber spokesperson told The Arizona Republic on Sunday that Caso’s access to its platform was removed.
“What’s been reported by the riders is deeply upsetting,” the spokesperson said. “Violence is not tolerated on the Uber app.”
