The man was able to get himself out of the vehicle and was taken to the hospital in “stable but serious” condition, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

A man was taken to a hospital in serious condition after his car flipped into a dry canal in Phoenix on Wednesday evening, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Fire Capt. Reda Bigler said crews responded to an extrication assignment that turned into a rescue call near 19th Avenue and Hatcher Road after responders realized the man’s car had flipped and landed on its roof, trapping the man inside.

The man was only briefly trapped because he was able to get himself out of the vehicle, the Fire Department said.

The Phoenix Police Department is working to determine the cause of the accident, Bigler said.

No further details were immediately available.
