Members of Sen. John McCain’s family, members of Congress and others are reacting to the news of his brain-cancer diagnosis.

Some statements were sent to Arizona Republic/azcentral.com reporters

From Larry Fitzgerald: “I’m sad to hear about it. He’s a wonderful man and has been very kind to me.”

From Charles Barkley: “I don’t know him well. I’ve met him a couple of times. But, No. 1 anybody who has the courage to go to war that to me makes them an instant icon. What he’s been through and accomplished in his life is just amazing. I think it’s fair to say the term living legend is true.”

From Arizona Coyotes President and CEO Steve Patterson: “Sen. McCain is a patriot, an American hero and part of our Coyotes family. He’s been a fighter his entire life and we know that he won’t stop fighting now. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his wife Cindy and his entire family.”

From Arizona Cardinals team President Michael Bidwill: “There’s not a person who has embodied toughness and courage throughout his life like John McCain and there is no doubt he will bring that to this fight as well. All of us at the Cardinals send our prayers and very best wishes to Sen. McCain and his family.”

From the Phoenix Suns organization: “Always the fighter, Sen. McCain has represented and supported our state and country with grit, perseverance and pride. In light of today’s news, we have no doubt he will take the same heroic approach to his latest fight. Senator McCain is a great friend of the Suns family and our entire organization wishes him the absolute best as he pursues his greatest victory yet.”

From Jerry Colangelo: “I’ve been a supporter of John McCain all these years. I have had nothing but great respect for him as a person and as a true American. When you look at the definition of self service you’ll see a photo of John McCain. That’s my opinion.

“Once you’re in politics you cannot please everyone. That goes with the territory. But I can say firsthand, from all my experiences with him, he has represented our state as well as anyone has ever represented our state.”
