The Phoenix police officer involved in an Aug. 5  shooting has been identified as Officer Kenneth Silvia.

The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon, when two police officers responded to a call about suspicious people in an area northeast of 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

Officers arriving on the scene saw two people in the alley who ran away,  Phoenix police spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said.

Silvia chased one of the men north to the 2100 block of West Glenrosa Avenue, where the man tried to jump a fence, Fortune said.

The officer ordered the man to stop, Fortune said. Then, the man came down from the fence and charged at the officer, trying to grab his gun, she said.

The officer held onto his weapon and shot the man, she said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he remained Thursday.

Police provided no updated information about the second suspect.
