A Gilbert police officer deliberately crashed his patrol car into another vehicle to stop a suspected drunken driver, Gilbert Police Department officials said.

The incident occurred Friday night near Lindsay and Pecos roads, Gilbert police said in a tweet, which included a picture showing a head-on collision.

Both the officer and the driver were taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for possible injuries.

The intersection was closed while the crash was under investigation, police said.
