Blink and you might miss another Power Five football offer for Jake Smith

A dizzying junior season of football offers has escalated to even more for the Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep running back/receiver.

Smith is at 25 now, two coming on Thursday from Georgia and Clemson of the SEC. National champion Alabama had offered him the week of the 5A state championship game.

Georgia and Clemson came a day after Ohio State offered. The University of Notre Dame offered last week. Smith is planning to attend Notre Dame’s Junior Day on Jan. 27.

His first offer came in September and blew up from there.

“I’ve been talking to a Georgia assistant coach for about a month and (Thursday) he said, ‘Let’s talk on the phone,’ ” Smith said. “He put me on the phone with the running backs coach and he offered me.

“Clemson was pretty much out of the blue. The wide receivers coach followed me (on Twitter) and said, ‘Call me right now,’ and he offered me right away.”

Notre Dame Prep coach George Prelock, whose team went 13-1, said that Smith’s speed and versatility makes him attractive to colleges.

“He is also an excellent student,” Prelock said. “He has a 3.5 GPA, which has also made it easy for colleges to recruit him.”

Smith, who is among azcentral sports’ eight candidates for Football Player of the Year after leading Notre Dame to the state final, would like to narrow his list before the start of his senior season.

Among his other offers: Arizona State, California, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Liberty, Nevada, Northwestern, Penn State, Syracuse, Texas, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Washington State and Wisconsin.

Texas offers NDP standout

Dec, 14, 2017

Notre Dame Prep junior receiver/running back Jake Smith picked up an offer from Texas on Thursday while on an unofficial visit.

Smith announced the offer on Twitter. It is his 19th offer since the summer.

He will visit Alabama on Saturday. Alabama offered Smith two weeks ago.

Smith helped Notre Dame Prep reach the 5A final with more than 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards.

He said Texas likes him all over the field, playing running back, receiver and returning kicks.

Dec. 1, 2017

Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep junior running back/receiver Jake Smith called the Alabama offer he picked up on Friday “surreal.” It was his 18th offer, and fourth since Oct. 24.

“I didn’t even know what to say,” Smith said about the phone conversation he had with one of coach Nick Saban’s assistants. “The coach I talked to said that Saban is fired up about about me and wants to meet me.”

This was Smith’s second SEC offer. His other one came from Vanderbilt.

Smith will help lead unbeaten Notre Dame into the 5A championship game Saturday afternoon at 3:30 against Peoria Centennial.

He also reportedly has offers from Arizona State, California, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Liberty, Nevada, Northwestern, Penn State, Syracuse, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Washington State and Wisconsin.

As Arizona Varsity pointed out on Twitter, Smith is now averaging a Division I offer every three days over the past month.

Oct. 4, 2017

The junior running back/wide receiver announced his latest offer from UCLA via Twitter.

In the last two weeks, Smith has also received offers from California — which already has a commitment from NDP’s Slater Zellers — and Duke. He also has offers from Syracuse, Liberty, Illinois, Indiana, Vanderbilt and Washington State.

By conference, he now has offers to play college football in the Pac-12 (3), Big Ten (2), ACC (2), SEC (1) and the FCS’ Big South (1).

Sept. 26, 2017

Smith picks up Illinois offer

Sept. 11

Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep’s Jake Smith received his second Division I offer, this one from Illinois. The junior announced the news via Twitter on Monday.

Smith, who plays running back and wide receiver for the Saints, got his first D-I offer from Vanderbilt of the SEC and just hours later scored four touchdowns in NDP’s 54-28 win over Phoenix St. Mary’s on Friday.

The talented offensive playmaker has truly enjoyed a breakout season in 2017, having tallied four touchdowns in two straight contests. The Saints are 4-0 and ranked third in azcentral’s latest 5A football rankings.

Smith scores four TDs after Vanderbilt offer

Sept. 8

How did Jake Smith celebrate his first Division 1 offer? All he did was score four touchdowns for the second straight week.

Smith, a junior at Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep, has received his first offer to play Division I football by Vanderbilt University, Smith announced via Twitter on Friday.

The 6-1, 185-pound Smith plays primarily running back and wide receiver for the Saints (4-0), who routed Phoenix St. Mary’s by a score of 54-28 on Friday. Just hours after Smith announced his offer from the SEC school, he hauled in four touchdown passes from quarterback Kylan Weisser.

The talented playmaker also had a career highlight game on Sept. 1 vs. Desert Mountain, where the junior went off for 326 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.
