A motorcyclist was struck and killed by a man suspected of driving impaired in North Phoenix early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Shortly after 2 a.m., a 52-year-old motorcyclist was driving west on Thunderbird Road near 7th Street, when he was struck from behind by a car, said Sgt. Jonathan Howard, a Phoenix police spokesman.

The motorcyclist died from his injuries, he said.

The driver of the car, a 38-year-old man, was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Howard said the driver was taken into custody as both speed and driver impairment appeared to be factors in the collision.
