Student killed in Flagstaff shooting had a blood-alcohol content of 0.285 percent when shot, County Medical Examiner Lawrence Czarnecki said in court Friday.

FLAGSTAFF — Testimony from a medical examiner Friday in the Northern Arizona University shooting trial showed that the muzzle of Steven Jones’ gun was no more than two feet away when it fired at the first victim, Colin Brough, who died of his wounds.

Jones, 20, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault for the Oct. 9, 2015, shootings on NAU’s campus that left one student dead and three others wounded. Jones is claiming self-defense.

County Medical Examiner Lawrence Czarnecki took the stand in Coconino County Superior Court and testified that Brough, 20, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.285 percent. When Jones’ defense attorneys did the math, the medical examiner agreed that Brough may have consumed 14 drinks within a short period of time.

“It could possibly represent that much,” he said.

Brough also tested positive for an active ingredient of marijuana and a lower-than-therapeutic level of the anti-anxiety drug commonly called Xanax. Czarnecki did not speculate on the interaction of the drugs.

The cause of death, according to Czarnecki, were two gunshot sounds, one of which severed Brough’s vena cava and aorta, causing him to bleed to death very rapidly.

The defense and jury on Friday focused on the trajectory of the bullets in Brough’s body.

Brough was said to be on a rise considerably higher than where Jones was standing with his gun. And yet the trajectory of both bullets went from up to down, suggesting Brough was leaning forward when he was shot.

Some witnesses have testified that Brough lunged or rushed at Jones. Others have said he did not. Prosecutors have suggested that perhaps Brough tripped and fell to explain his forward movement and the downward motion of the bullets.

The NAU shooting

Czarnecki said the other explanation for the trajectory was if gunman were shooting from above.

Witnesses have placed Jones and Brough as far as five to 15 feet apart when the shooting took place.

But Czarnecki said stippling, or gunpowder residue, around a gunshot wound to Brough’s shoulder indicated that the muzzle of the gun was in the range of two inches to two feet when the gun fired.

The other bullet went through a T-shirt into Brough’s chest, making it impossible to determine if there were stippling.

Czarnecki also noted fresh abrasions to Brough’s face, legs and hands that he could have suffered as he fell into the gravel or pavement after being shot.

What Czarnecki didn’t explain, and attorneys didn’t ask, was why Brough had multiple older scratches and bruises that were healing on his temples and jaw, back and legs that he had sustained at some earlier time.

More than 35 witnesses are expected to be called during the trial, which is in its second week.
