Maynard James Keenan and Puscifer are promising to take fans deep into the heart of the Arizona desert with the global livestream “Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti” on Oct. 30, the day their latest album hits the streets.
For those who haven’t been to Arcosanti, an experimental town near Cordes Junction, Architectural Digest once described it as a “utopian metropolis in the Arizona desert” that “looks like the sublime set of a big-budget sci-fi movie.”
And that makes it a prime location for Puscifer to launch its latest offering into the world, its architecture serving as the perfect backdrop for the chilling futuristic vibe of Mat Mitchell’s analog synth and Keenan’s haunted existential reckoning.
INTERVIEW: Maynard James Keenan on recovering from COVID-19, new Puscifer music and anti-maskers
Arcosanti is the perfect setting for a Puscifer show
Puscifer arrive at Arcosanti with a well-established reputation for theatrical productions, from a “Hee Haw”-themed revue to a desert campfire set with an Airstream trailer.
They’ve promised this performance will be “unlike anything Puscifer has done before.”
Keenan, who lives in Jerome, Arizona, spoke with Republic about Arcosanti last week in an interview whose topics ranged from “Existential Reckoning” to his recovery from COVID-19.
“I’m a big fan of concrete and steel and of course the desert,” he said. “So I love that insane, structural thing happening in the middle of nowhere out there. It’s pretty amazing. You’re immediately touching the desert there, high desert.”
He’s a big fan of those Arcosanti concrete structures.
“You can just tell artists had their fingers all over this and they had a vision for what they wanted to do,” he said.
“So just being able to perform in that space, hearing that sound reflected off those surfaces, seeing the landscape around you. Because it’s pretty open. You can see for miles there. It’s pretty inspiring.”
Keenan also talked about his love of Arcosanti in a press release announcing the livestream.
“If you’re not familiar with Arcosanti, I highly recommend that you look it up,” he said.
“It’s one of a long list of examples of architects, artists, actors, musicians, writers, and poets, people who are not necessarily from Arizona but came here and found that creative tick that burrows under your skin here, something that sets you in a motion to respond to this, what I consider to be equal parts inspirational and hostile environment.”
It’s not easy to survive in Arizona, he went on to say.
“There’s already been a dust devil that’s whipped through here, rattlesnakes, crazy red ants outside of my sleeping quarters which tried to consume my dog. We feel like we’re on the edge of the world. Imagine if you were an extra-terrestrial traveler and you landed in the Southwest and wanted to assume an identity here and blend in. This would probably be a good spot to do that.”
How to catch the show
Livestream tickets and exclusive merchandise are now available at Pusciferlive.com.
The livestream debuts at 3 p.m. Oct. 30 and remains on-demand for 72 hours.
Danny Wimmer Presents, the largest independent festival producer in the U.S., co-produced “Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti.”
“We could do a live stream from anywhere,” Wimmer says. “A sound stage, an empty theater. But this location, at Arcosanti, in the heart of the unforgiving yet beautiful Arizona desert, adds another dimension to Puscifer’s music.”
