The Coyotes acquired forwards Marian Hossa, Vinnie Hinostroza and defenseman Jordan Oesterle from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forwards Mackenzie Entwhistle, Marcus Kruger, Jordan Maletta, defenseman Andrew Campbell and a 2019 third-round pick, the club announced Thursday.
Hossa, 39, has a skin disorder and announced his retirement prior to the 2017-18 season. Hossa is signed for three more years and has a $5.275 million salary cap hit for each of those seasons. He will likely be placed on long-term injured reserve.
The Coyotes are no strangers to taking on large contracts for salary-cap purposes. Most recently, the club acquired Pavel Datsyuk’s $7.5 million deal along with the No. 16 pick in the 2016 draft.
Hinostroza, 24, is a right-shot winger and has registered 13 goals and 39 points in 99 career games with the Blackhawks over parts of the past three seasons. A Chicago native, Hinostroza tallied 76 points in 76 games while playing at Notre Dame.
Joining Derek Stepan and Christian Fischer, Hinostroza is just the third right-shot forward, a clear area of need for the team. He is signed for the next two years with a $1.5 million cap hit each season.
Oesterle, 26, is a left-shot defenseman who spent last season with the Blachawks and skated for parts of three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. He totaled 15 points in 55 games with Chicago last season.
Oesterle will likely contend for the team’s seventh defenseman spot in training camp.
The Coyotes acquired Kruger this offseason to fill the team’s fourth-line center position, but later re-signed Brad Richardson, who held the same spot last season.
Campbell served as captain of the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate in Tucson last season and has not played in the NHL since 2015-16.
Entwhistle, who turns 19 on Saturday, was a third-round pick by the Coyotes in 2017 and is likely headed back to play for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League next season.
Maletta, 23, was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets system last year and has yet to make his NHL debut.
