A 36-year-old man who police said fatally shot a former Lake Havasu City man on Easter turned himself in on Thursday to law enforcement, according to officials.

Police said Brian William Robinson, a Lake Havasu City resident, turned himself into the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office in Kingman, Arizona on Thursday at about 4 p.m.

Robinson had an active warrant for his arrest in connection to the fatal shooting of Stacy Hakes, 37, who was found with a gunshot wound in a vehicle on Easter near Sunfield Drive and Palo Verde Boulevard in Lake Havasu City.

Hakes recently got out of prison, where he turned his life around after struggling with drug abuse and survived COVID-19 only to be shot while visiting his daughter. Hakes served time at the Whetstone unit and continued working for Hometown Hero Project after he was released.

According to the Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry inmate data, Robinson also served time at the Arizona State Prison Complex Whetstone unit in Tucson for drug violations and worked for the Hometown Hero Project while there.

Robinson’s release date was June 2020, according to inmate data.

Robinson is facing charges for first-degree murder along with Adeline Rea, 31, and Ramon Canas, 44, who police arrested April 12 on suspicion of being accessories to the fatal shooting.

Police said there were no outstanding suspects, but have not released any additional details about the shooting.

Debra Hunsaker, Hakes’ mother, told The Arizona Republic on Monday that she is angry about the shooting of her son. She said she still feels “sick to my stomach,” and hasn’t returned to her work.

“I never thought it would be this after (Hakes) getting out,” said Hunsaker. “He was doing everything he was supposed to do, that’s the hard part.”

Hunsaker said Hakes had “paid his debt to society” after serving time in prison and had “no desire to do drugs at all.” After he got out, she said he would visit his daughter consistently on weekends in Lake Havasu City and spend time together swimming, skating and barbecuing.

“We all enjoyed having him, so many people loved him,” she said.

A celebration of life will be held for Hakes on May 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center, according to Hunsaker.
