A man was injured after being shot during a fight Thursday evening in Mesa, police said.

Two men were arguing near University Drive and Gilbert Road when one of the men pulled out a handgun and shot the other, said Detective Esteban Flores of the Mesa Police Department. 

The man, who is believed to be in his late 40s or early 50s, was taken to a hospital and was in surgery Thursday night, Flores said.

It’s unknown whether his injuries are life-threatening, Flores said.

The shooting suspect and the victim know each other, Flores said. The suspect was detained and being questioned Thursday evening, Flores said.

An investigation is ongoing.
