A shirtless man who was shot and wounded by Phoenix police officers Thursday night had reached for a gun tucked in his waistband, police officials announced Friday.

Two officers responded to a call about gunfire and loud music about 9:30 p.m. at a residence in the area of Seventh Street and Baseline Road, according to a Phoenix police news release. A caller gave police a description of the man who had allegedly fired a gun in front of a residence.

Officers found the 29-year-old man in a fenced front yard. He was not wearing a shirt and had a handgun tucked into his waistband, the release stated.

As the officers were giving commands, the man reached for the gun. Both officers fired and shot the man, according to the release. The man, whose name was not revealed, was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The gun was recovered at the location.

No injuries to police or residents were reported.

The two officers were male, 24 and 26 years old, and each had served two years with Phoenix Police Department.

It is the second police shooting involving Phoenix police this week. Phoenix police shot a man who advanced on an officer while armed with a wooden-handled pruning saw Wednesday evening, police said.

Law enforcement officers have shot at least 32 people in Maricopa County this year, according to data from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
