A Mesa man was hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot during an argument in Mesa, and another man is in custody in connection with the shooting, the Mesa Police Department said Tuesday.

At about 8 p.m., Monday, police responded to the 400 block of West Ninth St. for a shots fired call. Officers found Oscar Pacheco on the ground, bleeding from gunshot wounds, police said.

Witnesses identified the suspect as Jose Eladio Castro-Valenzuela, Mesa police said.

Witnesses told officers Castro-Valenzuela and Pacheco had been arguing next to the victim’s vehicle, police said. They then heard several gun shots and saw Castro-Valenzuela flee in a truck with a trailer attached, police said.

Officers found Castro-Valenzuela early Tuesday and he was arrested without incident, Mesa police said.

When interviewed, he admitted to shooting the victim, police said.

The victim has been identified as the ex-boyfriend of Castro-Valenzuela’s girlfriend, police said.

Castro-Valenzuela was booked for investigation of one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
