Just after 3 a.m. Friday, a 43-year-old man led state troopers on a foot chase across Loop 202, west of 40th Street in Phoenix.

The man, identified as J. Matthew Gramlich, called police to report an accident he was involved in, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. He told officers he was in an accident at 36th Street and was in illegal possession of marijuana, DPS said.

Troopers called for emergency medical personnel and, as the they arrived, Gramlich ran toward oncoming freeway traffic, according to DPS.

As troopers gave chase, Gramlich vaulted the highway’s dividing barrier and continued running toward oncoming traffic, according to DPS.

Troopers caught up to the man and fired Tasers at Gramlich after he resisted arrest, DPS said.

He was booked in Maricopa County jail on suspicion of endangerment, obstruction of a highway and illegal possession of marijuana.
